Chapter 14
My eyes focused on the screen, where Terry had opened the email. I checked the date; it had been sent about a month ago. Before Iâd received the documents showing that Mike was stealing from the city, by about a week.
The email address was an anonymous Gmail one. âIs there a way to trace that email?â I asked.
Terry shook his head. âNope. Well, not unless you have access to Googleâs servers. Then you could get an IP address from them. Or the cops could do it with a subpoena. But mere mortals like us donât have a chance. Besides, the person who did this was obviously careful. They probably created the account using public Wi-Fi and a VPN to render it even more difficult to trace.â
âOkay, so thatâs a dead end,â Holly said. âThatâs too bad, because if Iâm reading this right, I think whoever wrote this killed Mike.â
As I scanned the content, I had to agree.
Michael, youâve done wrong by the people of this town for too long. I know your secrets. And I will reveal them. Then, when your reputation is destroyed, your wife has left you, and your children refuse to take your calls, I will swoop in and take the only thing you have left: your life. Iâm watching you, Michael Jessup. The end is coming. Be aware.
âYup, I think that counts as a death threat,â I said.
âNo kidding,â Holly murmured. âWow.â
âI didnât realize the messages would be so explicit,â I said, shaking my head.
âThat appears to be the earliest one,â Terry said. âThere are others, and they all come from different email accounts. Thatâs why I donât think youâll have any luck tracing them. Whoever it is was careful; using free email accounts likely wonât be the only security steps they took to keep their identity hidden.â
âRight. That makes sense.â
âGo to the next one,â Sabrina said. âIf that was the first threat, I want to know what the others say.â
âWill do.â Terry clicked away at a few buttons on the keyboard, and a moment later, a second email popped up.
You thought ignoring me would work for you. You thought it was a good idea. Well, Iâm telling you, itâs not. Thereâs nothing you can do. I know you cheated on your wife. That leggy blonde sure tastes nice, doesnât she? Well, youâre going to enjoy the taste of your own blood, soon.â
âWhoever did this missed their calling as a horror movie scriptwriter,â I said. âI have chills just reading that.â
âDo you think itâs true that Mike was cheating on his wife?â Sabrina asked. Next to me, I could feel Holly tense up.
âWho knows? This is a small town, though. You knew Mike tried to run me over with his car. Donât you think weâd have heard about it if he was seeing someone?â
âYouâre probably right,â Sabrina said. âPlus, this person doesnât sound like the most stable. It wouldnât surprise me if theyâve got their information wrong. Or maybe the leggy blonde lives somewhere else.â
âThatâs also a possibility.
